What Rare Jackets Is
A Different Kind of Outerwear Brand.
Rare Jackets is an independent online-only store operated as a sole proprietorship. We do not have physical stores, warehouses, or mass production. Every jacket is made to order specifically for the customer after the order is placed. We work with a network of manufacturing partners who handle cutting, stitching, and assembly using the materials and specifications shown on each product page. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with any third-party brands, designers, movies, or public figures. Any style names or inspirations are used only for descriptive purposes.
The conventional outerwear industry works like this: a brand designs a collection, manufactures thousands of units in batch production, stores them in a distribution warehouse, and sells from stock until inventory runs out. Prices include a wholesale markup on top of a retail markup on top of a logistics markup. By the time a jacket reaches the customer, the price often reflects three or four layers of margin rather than the actual value of the leather and labour.
Rare Jackets operate differently. We design and maintain a permanent collection of over 800 jacket styles. When you purchase, your jacket enters production. Our team sources the material, cuts the pattern, stitches the seams, fits the hardware, adds the lining, and completes the final inspection — all for your specific order. The result arrives at your door in 7–14 business days via FedEx, DHL, or UPS.
Our Materials : What Every Jacket Is Made From
We Only Use What We Tell You
The product page for every jacket on our site specifies the exact material. What it says is what you receive. We do not use undisclosed blends or substitute cheaper hides mid-production. Our quality control process includes a material check at the cutting stage and a final inspection before dispatch.
Exceptional materials require expert hands. Our craftsmen bring decades of specialized experience to the cutting table and the sewing machine. Because every piece is made to order, our tailors take the time to evaluate each hide, cutting patterns precisely to highlight the natural beauty and strength of the grain. From the reinforced stitching on primary seams to the careful placement of hardware and lining, every stage of construction is handled with meticulous attention to detail.
Our operations are managed digitally, allowing us to work directly with skilled workshops that focus on leather garment production. This structure enables us to offer a wide range of styles without relying on mass inventory or traditional retail markups.
A Note on Natural Variation
Leather is a natural material. No two hides are identical. You may notice slight differences in grain pattern, surface texture, or colour tone between the product photography and your jacket. These variations are inherent to genuine leather and are not manufacturing defects. They are the proof that your jacket was made from a real hide, not a synthetic substitute.
Lambskin Leather
Lambskin is our most popular material, featured across our leather jacket, motorcycle, and bomber categories. It is cut from young sheep and carries a fine, tight grain with exceptional softness. Lambskin drapes naturally, requires minimal break-in time, and molds to the wearer's body within weeks of regular use. It is lighter than cowhide and has a silkier surface that responds beautifully to dyeing , which is why it appears in the widest range of colours across our collection.
Sheepskin Leather
Sheepskin shares the natural softness of lambskin but comes from mature sheep, giving it a slightly denser structure and stronger thermal properties. It is the dominant material in our aviator jacket and fur & shearling categories, where warmth and substance are as important as aesthetics. Sheepskin ages into a distinguished patina and becomes more characterful the more it is worn.
Full Grain Cowhide
Cowhide is the most structurally robust leather in our collection. Full grain cowhide retains the entire outer surface of the hide, including its natural grain variations and any marks from the animal's life. This is not a flaw , it is the evidence of genuine leather. Cowhide has greater abrasion resistance than lambskin or sheepskin and holds structured silhouettes over decades of wear. It is the material of choice for our motorcycle jackets and heavy outerwear.
Genuine Suede
Suede is produced from the inner split of a hide, either cowhide or lambskin depending on the style. The buffed interior surface creates the distinctive velvet-like nap that defines suede's visual character. Unlike smooth leather, suede has a matte finish that absorbs colour deeply and changes tone subtly in different light conditions. Our suede jackets require more careful maintenance than smooth leather styles, prolonged exposure to water can cause marking, and a regular application of suede protector spray will significantly extend the jacket's life.
Premium Faux Leather
For customers who prefer non-animal materials, we offer a selection of styles in premium polyurethane faux leather. Our faux leather composite replicates the grain texture, weight, and drape of genuine hide more closely than entry-level synthetic alternatives. It is water-resistant, requires no conditioning, and does not develop a patina over time. Every faux leather style is clearly labelled on its product page.
How Our Jackets Are Made
Production from Start to Finish
Once your order is confirmed, your jacket enters our production queue. Every jacket goes through the same structured construction process regardless of price point or style.
- Pattern cutting: The hide is cut to your size's precise pattern specifications. Shoulder width, chest, sleeve length, and body length are all determined at this stage. This is why size selection matters so much, the cut is irreversible.
- Seam construction: Primary seams are sewn with double-needle stitching for structural integrity. High-stress points , underarms, pocket openings, and waistbands, receive additional reinforcement.
- Hardware fitting: Zippers, snap closures, buckles, and D-rings are fitted and tested. We use YKK zippers on select premium styles. All hardware is checked for smooth operation before the jacket moves to lining.
- Lining: Viscose lining is the standard across our collection, fitted and sewn to the shell. Select styles feature faux shearling or faux fur lining as specified on the product page.
- Final inspection: Each completed jacket is examined for seam integrity, hardware function, lining alignment, and surface finish before being packaged for dispatch.
Standard production and shipping combined takes 7–14 business days. Express production and shipping takes 5–9 business days at an additional $40. If you need a jacket for a specific date, we recommend ordering express and building in at least one day of buffer.
